British Tilapia Interest on the Rise
Sales of British tilapia are going from strength to strength, both at home and abroad, as interest increases in its environmental credentials and versatility.
The Fish Company prides itself on the ethical and sustainable way it is producing British farmed tilapia in Lincolnshire and the industry has clearly taken note.
UK consumers can now order both whole tilapia and fillets from Regal Fish Supplies Ltd (www.regalfish.co.uk http://www.regalfish.co.uk/ ). This follows on from listings of British tilapia in both Tesco and Morrison's. In continental Europe, British tilapia is now being sold through George S Forman in Holland, AJA Agnieszka JarczyĆska in Poland and will also shortly be available through Carrefour in Spain. Conversations meanwhile are taking place to expand sales into Belgium and France.
Adrian Hartley from The Fish Company said: "From the beginning we set out to produce tilapia that was farmed to the highest ethical and environmental standards and are delighted with the industry response. Our tilapia meets many of the standards that chefs, retailers, suppliers and consumers are looking for when buying sustainable fish. Tilapia is rated 'one' by the Marine Conservation Society which indicates it is one of the most sustainably produced seafood products available - a standard that the UK government is now following when sourcing fish."
The fresh British tilapia produced by The Fish Company is 100% British and 100% traceable with proven provenance and fed on the best sustainable feed from Skrettings. Because of the use of sustainable feed and the production methods, The Fish Company's systems are Net Fish protein producers. The tilapia are not hormone treated and are reared in bespoke closed recirculation systems which helps prevent disease and the need for antibiotics
